An Overview
I’m Douglas Caird, a Fife and Edinburgh-based therapist and facilitator. I work in an integrated, person-centred way, with counselling/psychotherapy and holistic bodywork. My work wholly embraces and integrates elements of wider training, workshops, cpd and learning experiences, both professionally and personally. I can help and support you in the acknowledgement that something in your life needs your attention; in noticing how and where it’s affecting you, and, in finding ways and offering tools to help you embrace the responsibility needed to create the transformation you desire.
My job is not to “fix” you – the object of my work is to naturally facilitate a state of relaxed awareness where you can feel safe to recognise and address what you are noticing. This means that I do what I can to encourage and support you in making the most of your session – for your experience to be the one that is most helpful to you, and to be more accessible than it would be without me.
The route to where I am now
After graduating and qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor, and working in this profession for several years, I began to notice that I wasn’t happy and realised that I’d probably chosen the wrong career for me. I began to notice the symptoms of stress building in my body and mind, and after 2 episodes of what I would term “breakdown”, I decided to explore what were then referred to as “alternative” therapies, which I hoped might help, alongside my prescribed antidepressants.
I started, on recommendation, with The Metamorphic Technique, which fuelled my intrigue, then discovered reflexology, which helped me immensely on many levels. In 1995, I trained as a Reflexologist with The Scottish School of Reflexology in Edinburgh, at the same time, taking the not insignificant decision to move away from my work in property.
In 1997, I trained in massage, anatomy and physiology with The Scottish School of Herbal Medicine in Glasgow under Keith Robertson, who’s expansive approach was refreshing.
I had begun noticing that the physical, emotional and energetic are intrinsically linked, and between 2000 and 2003, trained in reiki to Master Level in East Lothian, taking time between the Levels to practice and experience this powerful work. Additionally, in 2003, I undertook training in Hypnotherapy with NLP in Newcastle.
Between 2004 and 2006, I trained in emotional freedom techniques and clinical hypnotherapy, including past life regression work in Hull, Yorkshire and Birmingham with Steve Burgess (Lionheart Training). Steve is a highly respected and recognised expert in past life regression and author of 2 books on the subject. Steve remains my teacher and mentor.
Later, but significant learning included a qualification in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector – BTEC Levels 3 & 4 – August 2011 at Stroud College, Gloucestershire and reiki – Tibetan Master/Teacher Level – September 2015 in Sheffield.
The way I work is influenced and inspired by The Wheel of Consent® as developed by Dr. Betty Martin. The Wheel of Consent® can be aptly described as “a life tool for relating with Honesty, Transparency and Integrity…”. I have trained with The Sea School of Embodiment (Consensual Touch™ Introduction 2017 – Devon) and The School of Consent (Like a Pro Training 2019 and 2021 – Manchester and online). At this time, I have decided not to undertake the final step to becoming a Certified Facilitator of The Wheel of Consent®. For more information, visit their website.
In August/September 2023, I undertook a certified 6-Day intensive Tantric Massage Practitioner course in Ireland with Nerea Carryon (https://www.nereacarryon.com/) and Rachael Nitya (https://rachaelnitya.com/). I chose to learn with Rachael and Nerea because of their training, experience and dedication to this hugely important, and often misunderstood and misrepresented therapeutic healing work. In particular, Rachael is a graduate of Sexological Bodywork with The School of Consent, who I have trained with and highly respect.
I chose to do this course for Me, for my own healing from relationships and conditioning around confidence, intimacy, touch and needs. The training has also deepened my understanding and awareness when working with my clients.
In June 2024, I graduated from a 2 year Professional Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy. I completed my placement hours and practiced as a Counsellor, on a part-time voluntary basis, with FDAMH, Falkirk’s Mental Health Association, until March 2025.
